Paddling for 2

A Paddling Excursion for Two

Orlando North is prized for its wide-open spaces, and with more than 2,000 lakes and rivers here, getting out on the water is a must. Probably the most scenic, invigorating kayak or canoe trip you can take is on the Wekiva River, a winding waterway that runs 16 miles through a good portion of Seminole County — much of it wilderness. Best of all, the spring-fed river stays a refreshing 72 degrees year-round. Our destination has an array of outfitters that will rent you vessels and gear, and the river has a number of entry points. For convenience, you can rent and launch at Wekiva Island (check for updated social-distancing measures) or use Wekiva Spring State Park Nature Adventures, which offers everything from watercraft rentals to self-guided and guided paddling adventures. If you’re looking to try new things as part of your getaway, give paddleboarding a go!

A Vacation Home for Two

Situated in an out-of-the-way spot on Lake Jesup (the nearest ‘burg is called Truck Corner), The Black Hammock is the embodiment of a rustic, real-Florida attraction. Exhilarating airboat rides are its biggest draw — and something you just have to experience! The Black Hammock offers eight vacation rental homes you might want to try, including a few that sit right on Lake Jesup. All of the vacation homes are clean, comfortable, and include modern amenities. Some — like the three-bedroom/two-bath Gator Nest — are downright plush. When it’s time for a bite to eat, The Black Hammock features two bar/restaurants that are adhering to social-distancing protocols. You’ll be five minutes from Oviedo and just 20 minutes from Historic Downtown Sanford and its bevy of restaurants and shops.

A B&B for Two, Plus a Beautiful Downtown

Couples can enjoy all the benefits of Historic Downtown Sanford while staying at the Higgins House, a 126-year-old Queen Anne Victorian just a few blocks from the Lake Monroe waterfront. The Higgins House has just three guest rooms, all of them impeccable and each with its own character. Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast, of course, lounge on the front porch rocking chairs or the sunny deck, or stroll the botanical garden.

You can keep the car parked if you like. It’s a leisurely walk to shopping, top-shelf restaurants, renowned craft breweries, the 1.8-mile Sanford Riverwalk, adjoining parks, and other diversions. While you’ll enjoy the intimacy of having your own cozy room, the Higgins House is adhering to social-distancing rules in the common areas.
Fun fact: The Higgins House is run by Lisa Hurt, the great-granddaughter of J.C. Higgins, who built the home for his family in 1894.

Tee It Up Oviedo

A Golf Weekend For Two

Golfing couples will find plenty to like in Orlando North. Our destination boasts five public or semi-private courses in or near Sanford, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Oviedo, Longwood. The courses are appropriate for all skill levels, so couples can enjoy a bit of friendly competition. As is usual in Florida, the layouts are mostly flat, with occasional rolling terrain, and are ornamented with lush greenery, including live oaks draped with Spanish moss. Our courses, clubhouses, and restaurants are as easy-going as the prices, and you’ll find ample lodging options near all the courses.

Dinner for Two — Take-Out or Dine-In

Imagine lounging under a shade tree, digging into a sumptuous meal, and gazing out on the water — with no one close to you. It’s easy to make this romantic scene happen in Orlando North. Our cities and towns all have ample park space, many situated on lakes and rivers.

One convenient option is to stroll the charming streets of Historic Downtown Sanford, grab something from one of the many fine restaurants, find a spot on the banks of Lake Monroe, and enjoy your meal. For a more outdoorsy vibe, grab a meal to-go in Geneva and take a quick ride to one of the several wilderness areas nearby. We can guarantee you’ll find a space where the nearest person is far away. These are just two examples of the countless ways to experience a romantic outdoor dinner for two in our destination. Candles optional.

For couples who prefer a more conventional sit-down meal, Orlando North restaurants are currently operating at 50% capacity indoors (as of early August), and many have outdoor seating with tables located at least six feet apart. We suggest you call the restaurant or check its website before visiting.

Dinner For Two, River-Cruise Style

How does a leisurely meal aboard a restored 123-year old “sternwheeler” paddleboat sound? Like fun, right? Then check out the Rivership Barbara Lee , which departs from Historic Downtown Sanford and cruises the St. Johns River. It offers an array of lunch and dinner cruise options, each lasting either three of four hours. That gives you extra time to enjoy the sun, the sites, and balmy breezes. The five-story Barbara Lee, a true classic, measures 105 feet and is propelled by huge wooden paddle wheels. All enclosed decks are climate-controlled. The ship offers several chef-prepared entrees with sides, as well as full bar service. In keeping with social-distancing guidelines, the Barbara Lee’s management is limiting the number of people on the boat. They recommend calling beforehand to make a reservation.
