Exploring D Ranch Preserve: West Volusia’s Newest Nature Escape

Central Florida just got a little bigger for nature lovers with the opening of D Ranch Preserve, a new stretch of protected land tucked away in Osteen. Formerly a working cattle ranch, D Ranch is made up of over 400 acres that have been permanently conserved to give visitors a place to experience the authentic Florida landscape. The preserve is free to visit and open every day from sunrise to sunset, making it an easy and accessible escape for anyone looking to trade the pavement for the woods.

The heart of the preserve is its network of trails that guide you through a mix of pine flatwoods, wetlands, oak hammocks, and open pasture. These paths are designed for casual use and are easy to navigate, which makes them a great fit for walkers, birdwatchers, and families looking for an unhurried outing. The trails are mostly flat and well marked, and because the land is a protected wildlife corridor, you will often see gopher tortoises near the sandy trail edges or sandhill cranes foraging in the open grass. Keep an eye toward the sky for bald eagles, hawks, scrub jays, and other birds, or look near the shaded treelines where white tailed deer and wild turkeys often gather. The wide open setting gives the preserve a peaceful, uncrowded feel that is hard to find in more developed areas.

While you are exploring the trails, you will also find the latest addition to the Wings of the West mural trail. Tucked away about ten minutes into the red hiking trail on the right, these interactive wings resemble those of a bat, highlighting one of the many residents that call the preserve home. Created by artist Erica Group, the mural is designed to complement the bat boxes that can be found further down the trail and provides a creative photo stop that feels like a discovery rather than a distraction.

The sense of community at D Ranch Preserve goes beyond just visiting for a hike. On the first Tuesday of every month, the First Tuesday Trail Team gathers for maintenance to keep the paths in good shape. These mornings usually end with an optional picnic lunch, and more maintenance days are often added seasonally. For those who want to see the land in a different light, the preserve hosts Star Parties on select evenings for stargazing and occasional Explore D Ranch guided nature walks led by staff and experts.

The preserve continues to grow as both a recreational and educational resource. Plans are currently moving forward for a future $2.5 million nature center, which will host programs about local ecosystems and why protecting this land is so vital for the future of Central Florida. Once completed, the center will serve as a hub for visitors to learn more about the environment they are exploring, further establishing D Ranch Preserve as a cornerstone of conservation in West Volusia.

A visit to the preserve is easy to pair with other local experiences in Osteen. The Osteen Diner is a local favorite just down the road and is a perfect stop for a meal before or after a hike. If you prefer to explore on two wheels, the preserve offers convenient access to regional bike routes that connect toward Titusville and link into the Lake Monroe Loop. Whether you are there for a volunteer morning, a guided walk, or a simple afternoon in the sun, D Ranch Preserve offers a grounded and welcoming look at the natural side of West Volusia.
